Land and livestock · from the first age
The Hedger and ditcher
In their time
The hedger and ditcher kept a manor's boundaries: digging and scouring ditches, raising banks, and making and mending hedges, whether dead hedges of stakes and woven wattle or quickset thorn planted to grow into a living barrier. It was hard, seasonal labour, usually done in winter, and it mattered: a broken hedge let beasts into the corn. He worked under the reeve and alongside the hayward, who guarded what he built.
