The Reeve
In their time
The reeve was the working foreman of a manor, usually a villein chosen by his fellow tenants or appointed by the lord, serving for a year or more. He organised ploughing, harvest and labour services, collected dues and answered for the manor's produce at the yearly audit of accounts. Caught between lord and neighbours, he was often unpopular, and Chaucer's sharp-dealing Reeve suggests the reputation. Some reeves did well out of the office.
