The bony antlers of deer, above all red deer, were a traditional raw material for combs and other small carved objects in Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian England. After 1066 Norman forest law increasingly restricted access to the deer and their woods, and antler steadily lost ground to bone and horn; by the early 13th century, if not before, it had dropped out of comb-making.
