Pelts with the hair left on, used to line and trim clothing. The most prized furs in 12th-century England were imported from the Baltic and Russia: squirrel, sable and ermine, bought by the king and the great. Native furs came from animals such as fox, otter, cat, lamb and rabbit, and were less fashionable. Which furs a person wore signalled their rank.
