Linen thread

Flax → Linen thread → Linen cloth → Padded jack

Thread made from the stem fibres of flax. The harvested plants were soaked (retted) in ponds or left on damp grass until the stems rotted, then dried, beaten and combed to free the fibres, which were spun on a hand spindle. Strong and smooth, linen thread was used for sewing, weaving linen cloth, fishing lines and nets, snares and bowstrings.

Caveats (confidence: medium)

The spinning wheel was not in use in 12th-century England; hand-spindle spinning is assumed. Hemp was also used for some cordage.
