A fishing line with iron hooks. Early medieval English hooks were forged by smiths, often large with pronounced barbs, and many shapes and sizes are known from excavations. Lines could be spun from plant fibres such as nettle or hemp. Hooked lines were used both singly in rivers and set in long lines at sea.
Caveats (confidence: medium)
Evidence cited is largely Anglo-Saxon and Viking-age; line materials in 12th-century England are not closely documented.
