A net knotted from spun fibre, used to catch fish in rivers, estuaries and at sea. Nets were made with a netting needle of wood, bone or antler, weighted with stone sinkers and sometimes floated; they could be dragged or set in place, or fixed at the mouth of a weir. Medieval nets were made from plant fibres such as hemp or nettle.

Detailed evidence is early medieval (Anglo-Saxon); 12th-century practice is assumed similar.
