Loom
The loom wove yarn into cloth. In 12th-century England the new horizontal treadle loom, introduced perhaps as early as the late 11th century, was replacing the upright two-beam loom. Weaving, earlier mostly women's work at home, was becoming an organised urban trade: the London weavers' guild paid the Crown in the Pipe Roll of 1130 and received a royal charter from Henry II in 1155.

Upright looms remained in use alongside treadle looms; the change was gradual and uneven.
