Thread spun from wool. The fleece was washed, picked over and combed or teased before spinning; toothed hand-cards appear in Europe only around the 13th century. Spinning was done with spindle and distaff, mostly by women, and was a constant background task. Yarn was wound into skeins or balls ready for weaving on the loom.
