Woollen cloth

Woven from spun wool, then fulled to thicken it, England's chief manufactured good. By the late 12th century weavers and fullers in towns such as London, Winchester, Oxford, Beverley and Marlborough were under recorded regulation. Qualities ranged from cheap burel for the poor to fine scarlets from Lincoln and Stamford. The earliest known English fulling mill is recorded in 1189.
