Small sewing needles made from iron or copper-alloy wire, with one end flattened and an eye punched through; bone needles were also used for coarser work. They were essential for making and mending clothes and for sewing leather, sails and bags. Needles were small and easily lost, and were often kept in cases of bone or metal.
