A thick coat made of many layers of linen or wool, quilted together. In the twelfth century such coats, then called gambesons among other names, were worn by knights beneath mail and by poorer soldiers as their main armour. They gave useful protection against cuts and blows. The word 'jack' for such a garment is a later medieval term.
