Venison

The meat of deer: red deer, roe deer and fallow deer, the last probably introduced by the Normans. Under forest law, codified in Henry II's Assize of the Forest (1184), deer in royal forests were reserved to the king, and at its height about a third of southern England lay under forest law. Venison was therefore mainly food for the king, the nobility and those they favoured, often given as gifts.
