Iron shoes nailed to horses' hooves to protect them from wear. English horseshoes of the mid-12th to late-13th century typically had a wavy outer edge, caused by rectangular nail holes set close to the rim, and small raised heels, called calkins, for grip. Smiths forged them, and shoes were often reset several times before being replaced.
