A hardened iron or steel bar with a surface of cut teeth, used to shape and smooth metal, horn, bone and wood. Files were standard smith's tools long before the 12th century: they occur in a 7th-century smith's grave at Tattershall Thorpe in Lincolnshire and in the Viking-age Mästermyr tool chest. Smiths, locksmiths and metalworkers used them for finishing work.
