A long, slightly curved iron blade fixed almost at right angles to a long wooden handle, swung with both hands close to the ground. In medieval England it was chiefly used for mowing hay in meadows, a heavy task often owed to lords as a labour service. Standing wheat was generally cut with the sickle, though scythes could be used for oats, barley or straw after reaping.
