Hay

Grass cut and dried as winter fodder for oxen, horses and other stock. Meadows were left to grow through spring and early summer, mown with scythes, dried and stacked, then grazed. Hay meadow was among the most valuable land in a medieval village and is recorded separately in Domesday Book. Without enough hay, animals could not be kept through winter.
