A curved iron blade on a short wooden handle, used one-handed to cut standing grain while the other hand gathered the stalks into a bunch. It was the main harvesting tool for wheat and rye in 12th-century England, and harvest work by teams of reapers was a major seasonal labour. The cut sheaves were bound, stooked to dry and carried to the barn for threshing.
