A hardy cereal that tolerates cool, wet weather and poor soils, grown especially in the north and west of England. Usually sown in spring, oats were used for pottage, oatcakes and brewing, and above all as fodder for horses. On sandy soils oats and barley were often the main spring crops, with rye sown in winter.
