Brewhouse
A brewhouse was where ale was made by mashing malted barley or oats in hot water, draining off the wort and fermenting it. Medieval English ale contained no hops; brewers may have flavoured it with honey, meadowsweet or mugwort. Brewing was done largely by women in their own homes, as well as in the larger brewhouses of monasteries and great households. Hopped beer was imported from the Low Countries around 1400, and hops were grown in England by 1428.
