Honey → Mead

An alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey with water, sometimes flavoured with herbs. It was a prestige drink in Anglo-Saxon halls, celebrated in poetry. Because honey was costly, mead was never an everyday drink. By the twelfth century ale was the ordinary drink of most people, and the wealthy increasingly drank wine imported from France, but mead was still made.
