Drink
Ale
Picture to come.
The everyday drink of 12th-century England, brewed from malted grain, most often barley but also oats, and water. It was unhopped, so it soured within days and was made locally and often, very frequently by women in their own homes. Ale supplied both liquid and calories. Hopped beer did not reach England from the Low Countries until the late 15th century.
Caveats (confidence: high)
Strength and flavouring varied and are poorly recorded for this century; herbal flavourings used in England are uncertain.
