Peas and beans

Field peas and broad beans were grown in the open fields as part of the crop rotation, usually sown in spring. Dried, they kept well and went into pottage through the year, and they were also fed to animals. Pulses were an important food for ordinary people, though they occupied only a modest share of the fields.

The share of land given to pulses in the 12th century is not well recorded; the figure available (up to 8 per cent in Wiltshire) is 13th-14th century.
