Vines were grown in a limited way in southern England. Domesday Book records vineyards at about 45 places, all in the south-east and nearly all held by Normans or great abbeys. English grapes were made into wine and could be pressed unripe for verjuice. Much of the wine drunk in England was imported.

English vineyard output in the 12th century is poorly known; the scale of wine imports was not checked in detail.
