Forge

A forge was the smith's hearth: a charcoal fire, either at floor level or raised to waist height, blown by bellows to bring iron to working heat. Here blooms were reheated and consolidated, and bar iron was worked on the anvil into tools, nails and fittings. Smiths often worked apart from smelting sites, buying iron through trade. Because of fire risk and noise, forges tended to stand at the edge of settlements.
