An iron-headed cutting tool on a wooden haft, forged by smiths and used for felling trees, cutting firewood, splitting timber and squaring logs into beams. It was the principal tool of the medieval carpenter, alongside the adze and auger, and shapes varied from lighter felling axes to broad-bladed axes for hewing. It was also carried as a weapon, though that is a separate use.
