An iron-headed digging tool on a wooden handle, used by miners and quarrymen to break out rock and ore, and by labourers for digging hard ground. The iron head was forged by a smith and fixed to an ash or other hardwood haft. Picks were essential to lead and iron mining and to the busy stone quarrying of the period.
