A finished arrow combined a straight wooden shaft, an iron head and feathered fletchings glued and bound near a notched tail, or nock, that sat on the bowstring. Arrows were shot from self bows in war and in hunting; Gerald of Wales, writing in the 1180s, describes Welsh arrows penetrating armour. Heads varied by purpose, from narrow bodkins against mail to barbed hunting points.
