Horn

The horn sheaths of cattle, sheep and goats, a by-product of slaughter. Horn is easy to shape once softened and was made into combs, spoons, cups, drinking and hunting horns, handles, and translucent panes for lanterns. It rarely survives in the ground, so it is under-represented in archaeology, but hornworking was a common medieval craft near cattle markets.

Specific 12th-century English horn objects were not checked; the organised Horners' Company is much later.
