The straps and fittings that let an animal pull a cart or plough. The padded horse collar, which pressed on the shoulders instead of the throat, came into general use in Europe in the 12th century and made horses far more effective draught animals. Harness was mainly of leather with wooden and iron fittings. In England oxen, yoked in teams, still did much of the heavy pulling.
