Pitch

A black, sticky substance made by boiling down tar or resin from pine and other woods. It was used to caulk the seams of ships and boats, waterproof timber and rope, and coat torches. In later medieval England much pitch and tar was imported from Scandinavia and the Baltic; the sources of supply in the twelfth century are uncertain.
