Beaver pelt

The dense, waterproof fur of the Eurasian beaver. Beavers were already scarce in southern Britain: Gerald of Wales, touring Wales in 1188, recorded them on the River Teifi and noted they were hunted for their skins. Written references cease in the early 14th century, and the species is thought to have become extinct in southern Britain by around 1300.

Extent of beaver populations in 12th-century England itself is uncertain; Gerald's account concerns Wales.
