Betony

A purple-flowered herb of grassland, heath and woodland edges. Betony was among the most esteemed plants of medieval medicine, the subject of a whole tract in the herbal tradition inherited by Anglo-Norman England. It was believed to cure a wide range of ills; one medieval list includes fear, 'violent bile' and 'chilly need'. It was gathered wild and grown in monastic gardens.
