Elecampane root

The thick, aromatic root of elecampane, a tall yellow-flowered plant probably introduced to England in early times. Under its Old English name, eolone, it appears dozens of times in the 10th-century Leechbook and other Anglo-Saxon medical texts. Following classical authorities, medieval writers believed it was good for the lungs and chest; later centuries sold candied elecampane for coughs.
