Foxglove

A tall native plant with spires of purple bell-shaped flowers, common on heaths and woodland edges. It is highly poisonous. It was known in Anglo-Saxon England, where the name foxes glofa appears in herbal texts and glossaries, but its use in 12th-century medicine is unclear. Its action on the heart was only set out by William Withering in 1785.

The Old English name is well supported as foxglove but not certain in every instance; no clear 12th-century medicinal use was found.
