Hawthorn berries

The small dark red fruits, or haws, of the hawthorn, a common shrub of hedges and woodland edges. They are dry and mealy. Medieval sources treat haws, like hips and hazelnuts, as wild food to fall back on in hard times rather than a delicacy; a 14th-century English romance lists them among foods that could keep a person alive in the woods.
