Hazelnuts

The nuts of the hazel, a common shrub of English woods and hedges, often coppiced for its rods. Hazelnuts ripen in early autumn and were gathered from the wild; their shells are frequently found on archaeological sites of all periods. They could be eaten fresh or stored, and in hard times formed part of the wild food country people relied on.
