Nettles

The common stinging nettle of hedgerows, farmyards and waste ground. Young spring tops were cooked in pottage like other greens. Nettle is one of the plants named in the Anglo-Saxon 'Nine Herbs Charm', showing its place in early English medicine and belief. Its fibres can be spun, but evidence for nettle cloth in twelfth-century England was not found.
