Plantain (waybread)

A low plant with broad, ribbed leaves that grows on paths and trampled ground, hence its Old English name 'waybread'. It is one of the herbs named in the Anglo-Saxon 'Nine Herbs Charm', recorded in the tenth century. The leaves were believed to heal wounds, sores and bites and were applied to the skin; these were beliefs of the time, not proven cures.
