Cord twisted from plant fibres such as hemp, flax or lime bast, made by spinning fibres into yarns and twisting several yarns together in the opposite direction. Rope was used for ships' rigging and mooring, hauling timber and stone, well buckets, bells, tethering animals and lashing scaffolds.
