The long, fine fibres from flax stems after retting. The dried stems were beaten, scutched to knock away the woody parts, and hackled, combed through spikes, to leave clean fibres ready for spinning into linen thread. Linen was used for shirts, undergarments, head coverings, sheets and altar cloths.
