The coarse, strong fibre from retted hemp stems. After soaking, the stalks were dried, beaten and scutched to free the fibre, which was then combed and spun. Hemp yarn was used above all for rope and cord, and also for fishing nets, sacking and heavy cloth such as sailcloth.
