Artemisia absinthium, a grey-leaved, intensely bitter aromatic plant of waste ground. It appears in Anglo-Saxon remedies, including salves and charms against 'elf-shot', and in the Middle Ages it was believed to expel worms and to deter fleas and moths, being laid among clothes. Its bitterness was proverbial. It is toxic in large amounts. Described as historical belief, not medical advice.
