A common plant of grassland with finely divided, feathery leaves and flat heads of small white flowers, called 'gearwe' in Old English. It is one of the native plants long used in folk remedies and charms, and appears in Anglo-Saxon herbal medicine; it was traditionally applied to wounds, the belief reflected in its Latin name Achillea, after Achilles.
