Manor house
A 12th-century manor house was the lord's residence and the centre of his estate. Wealthier lords built in stone: at Boothby Pagnell, Lincolnshire, a late 12th-century house has a first-floor hall and chamber over a vaulted undercroft, reached by an external stair, with a hooded fireplace and round-headed windows. Saltford Manor House in Somerset preserves a two-storey chamber block of about 1150. A separate hall usually stood nearby.
