Window glass was a costly rarity in 12th-century England. It was not made in England at all: until the 13th century all window glass was imported from the Continent, especially northern France and Germany. It was fitted in high-status buildings, above all abbeys and major churches. An English glass industry began in the Weald on the Surrey-Sussex border in the 13th century.

Whether any domestic or secular buildings had glazed windows in the 12th century is not established; ordinary houses used shutters.
