The Barber-surgeon
In their time
Barbers shaved and cut hair, but they also let blood, drew teeth, lanced boils and set bones, and the line between barber and surgeon was blurred. Surgeons learned by apprenticeship rather than at university and ranked below learned physicians. In London the barbers' and surgeons' companies were united in 1540. Barber-surgeons served ordinary townsfolk and followed armies to war, where their skill with wounds was badly needed.
