The Midwife
In their time
Childbirth was women's business: the midwife, with neighbours and kinswomen, attended the mother while men kept away. Midwives learned by experience and reputation rather than formal training. Because a newborn might die before a priest could come, the Church cared that midwives could baptise correctly in an emergency, and by the sixteenth century bishops were licensing them. A trusted midwife was a respected figure in her parish.
