The Physician
In their time
Physicians were university-trained men who relied on ancient authorities such as Galen and on the theory of the four humours. They diagnosed by examining urine, feeling the pulse and consulting the stars, then prescribed diet, bleeding or medicines made up by apothecaries. There were few of them and they were expensive, so they served the wealthy, the Church and the crown. In the earlier period many were clerics.
