The Coroner
In their time
The office of coroner was established in the late twelfth century to keep the pleas of the crown: recording sudden deaths, wrecks, treasure and other matters that brought the king revenue. The coroner held inquests over bodies with a jury of local men and recorded findings for the royal justices. Coroners were elected in the county court from among local knights or landholders and were supposed to be men of substance, unpaid at first.
